Engineering Career

John graduated from Manchester University in 1985 with a First Class Honours Degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He spent 10 years at Rolls-Royce PLC as a Turbine Technologist involved in the aerodynamic and cooling design of military aircraft turbine blades such as those found in the Typhoon and Harrier.

 

In the last two years at Rolls-Royce, John was involved in a
re-engineering task force aimed at improving the efficiency and success of Rolls-Royce's aircraft design process. This "clean sheet of paper approach" helped John and his family decide that a life in Cornwall was desirable and this prompted the move to financial services in 1995.

 

Financial Services Career

John was employed as a financial adviser with London Life, Friends Provident, Equitable Life, before becoming an independent financial adviser in 2001 with a firm in Cornwall, before founding Atkins Ferrie Wealth Management.

 

John has obtained four qualifications at Advanced Planning Level, obtaining the Advanced Financial Planning Certificate. One of these papers included the Pensions examination allowing John to advise on Company Pension scheme transfers.

 

John also passed the advanced examination of Investment Portfolio Management and this is essentially John's specialist role, although the full range of advice is given to clients with relevant needs.

 

Approach To Advice

John's strategic planning experience in the latter days at Rolls-Royce remains highly influential to his thought process.

 

It is important to determine the key issues which are of importance to each client both now, in the immediate future and also in later life when retirement and succession planning can be of influence.

 

Each new client is unique and a 'blank canvas' and as such John has no pre-conceptions or favoured solutions. His over-whelming aim is to ensure total impartiality and that every available product or solution is considered and available at all times.

 

As far as investments are concerned, in a rapidly changing investment world, John finds it essential to 'think outside of the box' when it comes to asset allocation. He does not believe in merely sticking to industry recognised benchmarks over a period of time, but will try to identify how firstly, clients' wealth can be protected from losses as far possible; but at the same time also identify when specific assets look good value and recommend tactical switches whenever possible.

RONNIE WILLIAMS BA (Hons) DipPFS Certs CII(MP & ER) - Quality Assurance Director & Financial Adviser

Ronnie was born and educated in Helston, before moving to Exeter in 2000. Ronnie graduated from the University of Exeter in 2003 with a BA Honours Degree in Economics and Geography. On graduation, Ronnie returned to Cornwall and has spent 8 years in the financial services industry, working with GE Money. Here he gained his mortgage qualifications and, previous to joining AFWM, worked as a Certified Mortgage Adviser.

 

Ronnie joined AFWM Ltd in August 2011 as a research and support assistant. In this role he worked closely with John Waldie whilst also studying to gain his Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning. Ronnie has worked in his current role of financial adviser since February 2013. Most recently, and in response to client need, Ronnie has added another string to his bow by gaining his Equity Release qualification.


When not in the office Ronnie is a keen sportsman, he is a qualified cricket coach and can often be found, on a Saturday, playing for his local team.

ROB BAYLIS BA (Hons) FCA DipPFS - Financial Director and Financial Adviser

Rob was born and educated in Alcester, Warwickshire before moving to Birmingham where he graduated from Birmingham Polytechnic with a BA Honours Degree in Accountancy and was awarded the tax prize. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in 1993 and then moved into industry with Magneti Marelli where he spent 4 years, becoming Financial Controller and part of the senior management team. He then spent 2 years as a Management Consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers.

 

In 2000, he and his family moved to Cornwall and he has spent the past 14½ years in the renewable energy industry including 6 years with Nuon, the Dutch utility and 5 years with Vattenfall, a large Swedish based, European energy company. Whilst with Nuon UK Ltd he was Head of Finance and with Vattenfall Wind Power Ltd he has held the positions of Senior Acquisition Manager and Head of Onshore Development in England & Wales.

 

Rob is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales and gained his Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning in 2015.

 

Outside of work, Rob is learning to play the electric guitar, practices yoga and keenly follows 'his' football team. He is also an avid reader and enjoys long walks with his family and their dog.

JAMES SCULTHORP-WRIGHT BSc (Hons) DipPFS CertCII (DM) - Financial Adviser & Assistant Portfolio Manager

James first joined AFWM in 2013 as a research assistant, providing technical support to the Managing Director John Waldie. During his time in the role he studied towards his Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning, as well as the Certificate in Discretionary Investment Management.

 

James was born in Plymouth before moving to Cornwall at a young age. He was fortunate enough to attend Truro School where he studied A-Levels in Economics, Business and Chemistry; receiving straight A's. On leaving Truro School, James moved to Birmingham to attend Aston Business School, one of only 1% of business schools worldwide to be triple accredited; graduating with a First Class Business and Management BSc Honours Degree. James also came top within the Tax Module of the Degree. In 2015 James was honoured to be invited to join Beta Gamma Sigma. The honour society is prestigious and internationally renowned, recognising academic excellence of business students who studied in the world's best business schools, accredited by the Association of Advanced Collegiate Schools of Business. Membership is by invitation only and is offered to the most outstanding scholars.

 

James' main role is as a financial adviser, and will also be assisting as a locum for the future planned Discretionary Fund Management service.

 

When not in the office, James can often be found cycling, kayaking local rivers, or volunteering his time for South Western Ambulance Service as a first responder.

JAMES CURRIE BSc (Hons) DipPFS – Financial Adviser

James began working at AFWM in 2014 as a research assistant where he provided technical support to the financial advisers at the firm. This role also involved fund and product research as well as the operation of the Penberth Service regular fund switching facility. During this time he began studying towards his Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning. James returned to Swansea University to finish his degree and graduated with first class honours in Accounting and Finance.

 

James has since rejoined AFWM after completing his Financial Planning Diploma and is now working as a financial adviser, alongside continuing in his research role.

DEXTER COCKLE BA (Hons) DipPFS – Financial Adviser / Research Assistant

Dexter first joined AFWM in 2015 as a Research and Support Assistant to John Waldie and Ronnie Williams whilst studying towards his Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning.

 

Dexter was born and educated in Cornwall before moving to Bristol to attending university. Dexter graduated from the University West of England with a first class (BA Hons) degree in Accounting & Finance and has some experience of working in the finance industry. Prior to joining AFWM Ltd Dexter worked in the Recruitment Industry as an Account Manager and Recruitment Consultant.

 

Dexter's is now a Financial Advisor with AFWM and still assists the firm with fund and product research as well as the operation of the Penberth service regular fund switching facility.

 

When not in the office Dexter is a keen sportsman with interests in Athletics, and Tennis. He has a strong passion towards music and plays the piano.

CHRIS TOWELL (CeMAP) - Independent Mortgage & Protection Adviser

 

Chris Towell

Chris was born and educated in Helston, Cornwall before moving to Yorkshire to complete Business and Finance at York Sixth Form College. Upon returning to Cornwall in 1999, he started an 18 year career with GE Money where he worked in several different roles including Underwriting, Mortgage Adviser, Team Leader and Customer Experience and Outcome Manager.

 

Chris joined AFWM in April 2017 looking to drive the mortgage side of the business forward, incorporating a strong ethics based belief into the mortgage field. He deals with residential mortgages, buy to let and holiday let mortgages and reviews the protection needs of his clients.

 

Outside the office, Chris enjoys spending time on the golf course or enjoying the beautiful scenery that Cornwall has to offer. He plays football for several local sides including Helston, Cury and Wendron.

ROB COOTE BEng (Hons) - Research Assistant

 

Rob Coote

Rob joined AFWM Ltd as a Research Assistant in June 2017. His primary role within AFWM Ltd is to provide technical support to the Managing Director, John Waldie. This involves fund and product research as well as the operation of the Penberth service regular fund switching facility. During this role Rob is also studying towards his Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning with the aim of becoming a qualified financial adviser.

 

Rob lives in Falmouth and comes from a strong Cornish background. He studied Engineering and Management at the University of Exeter alongside playing rugby for the Exeter Chiefs. Having completed his degree he played a season at the Cornish Pirates and approached AFWM Ltd in an attempt to gain some industry experience. After helping at charity events and shadowing advisers in some of his days off from the Pirates he managed to secure his position as a Research Assistant.

 

In his own time, Rob loves to travel and play sport. Before starting at AFWM Ltd he travelled to Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia for 7 months. At university Rob was selected to play for England Students Rugby team where he earnt 8 Caps. He was also selected to play for Great Britain Universities Rugby 7s team and helped to win the World Championships in Brazil. Now, you could find him playing for Redruth Rugby club most weekends in the season.

CHRISTINE BOLITHO - Executive Administrator - St Agnes

Christine is currently the principal for administrative issues. After successfully completing the London Chamber of Commerce & Industry Secretarial Intensive Course at Cornwall College, Christine was employed by the then Helston based Chartered Architects, Roger Schofield + Associates. Five years later Christine was approached by John Crowther + Associates, again Chartered Architects, of Truro where she continued her Architectural Administration for a further eight years as Personal Assistant to the 3 Partners.

 

After a 12 month family break Christine resumed her career in Penzance and has for the past 17 years been employed in Financial Administration covering both the Mortgage and Investment fields, which gave her the essential background prior to joining AFWM Ltd in February 2011.

ALISON CURTIS - Executive Administrator - Helston

Alison is responsible for our commission reconciliation and carries out administration duties also. Following her school education, Alison joined NatWest Bank in Camborne and was employed by them for 22 years during which she also worked in the Personal Banking Team in Truro, this included a 4 year break to raise her family.


Alison has several computer/secretarial qualifications and on joining an Independent Financial Advisers firm as a Personal Assistant in Truro in 2000 also gained the Financial Planning Certificate.

 

Alison was promoted to Commission and Accounts Manager which she enjoyed for a further seven years before bringing her knowledge and expertise to AFWM Ltd in October 2011.

 

As a consequence of a recent promotion Alison now also operates the Penberth regular fund switch service.

KAREN FIELDING - Executive Administrator & Company Secretary – St Ives

Other than Company Secretary and administrative duties, Karen is coordinator of the Company's special projects such as the restoration of our St Agnes property.

 

Following her education Karen joined Barclays Bank and has since had a varied and interesting career. Originally focussed on corporate finance she joined JCB, being the first female to join the Finance arm of the business based out in the field. Following this Karen moved into the marketing side of things, firstly in the Construction industry before moving into the professional services sector where she was Marketing Manager at Bishop Fleming Chartered Accountants. After 5 years at Bishop Fleming Karen joined Michelmores LLP, a leading law firm, advising clients across the UK and abroad with offices based in Exeter, Bristol and London. Here Karen was Assistant to the Practice Director providing a business support function to the whole of the firm.

Danielle Smith

Danielle was born and raised in Newquay. She attended Treviglas Community College where she took her A-Levels. At the age of 18 Danielle took a gap year and travelled to Australia. Upon returning home she then went on to achieve a degree in Law and Marketing at the University of the West of England.

 

After graduating, Danielle obtained a place on a graduate scheme with HSBC in Bristol. She worked for the bank for close to 9 years in roles including Senior Customer Services Officer and Retail Branch Manager. Danielle has a Certificate in Mortgage Advice, a Professional Certificate in Banking and a Certificate in Retail Banking Conduct of Business.

 

In 2013 Danielle and her husband made the decision to leave Bristol and return home to Newquay. Outside the office, she enjoys Pilates and kayaking – though is a complete novice in both! Danielle joined AFWM in May 2017

Sally's role is split between Quality Assurance and Administration. She assists Ronnie Williams on overseeing and managing the regulatory compliance needs of the business and general administration.

 

Sally was born in Cornwall and has lived in Helston since 1982. After leaving Helston School, Sally joined NatWest bank where
she enjoyed a varied career for 35 years working in a number of branches in West Cornwall. For a 2 year period she was the Regional Service Coach.

 

After starting her family Sally chose to work part time and started a successful job share with Jo which they enjoyed for 20 years, the last 14 years being spent as branch managers in St Ives before joining AFWM Ltd.

JO ALLEN – Auto Enrolment Coordinator & Administrator – St Ives

Jo's role is split between assisting Rob Baylis with Auto Enrolment and Mortgage Administration.

 

Jo was born in Bristol before moving to Cornwall in her early years. After completing her education she joined NatWest bank in Camborne where she worked for the first 13 years of her banking career before being appointed as joint branch manager at the St Ives branch with Sally. During this time, for an 8 year period, Jo assisted her husband in the running of his own business. Having completed 28 years with the bank, primarily in customer service roles, Jo has taken the opportunity to pursue another career path, joining AFWM Ltd in 2015 at a very exciting time.
